From Dust to Dawn: Week 1: Remember You Are Dust

24
Feb

This Sunday, we begin our Lenten journey together with a new series titled From Dust to Dawn.

Lent is a season that invites us to slow down, reflect deeply, and return to what is true. Before we rush toward Easter morning, we begin with something quieter, humbler, and surprisingly freeing:

“Remember you are dust.”

Those words may sound heavy at first. In a culture that tells us to strive harder, build more, prove ourselves, and curate a perfect life, being called “dust” doesn’t feel very inspiring.

But in Genesis 2:7, we’re given a beautiful picture:

“Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…”

We are formed from dust — humble, finite, dependent.

But we are also sustained by breath — God’s own life given to us.

Lent begins by telling the truth about who we are:

  • We are not self-made.
  • We are not self-sustaining.
  • We are deeply loved and held by a compassionate Father who remembers our frame.

Naming our limits is not despair.

It’s freedom.

Baptism Sunday — A Beginning Marked by Surrender

This Sunday is especially meaningful for us because we will be celebrating baptisms at the start of this Lenten season.

Baptism is a declaration of surrender.

It is saying:
“I lay down my life.”
“I stop striving.”
“I trust the One who formed me.”
“I rise into new life in Christ.”

What a powerful way to begin Lent — not with performance, but with surrender. Not with proving ourselves, but with trusting Jesus.

If you have been considering baptism, this may be your moment.

Baptism isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about placing your life in the hands of the One who formed you from dust and fills you with His breath.

If you’re ready to take that next step, we would love to walk with you.

The Journey Ahead

Over the coming weeks, we will move together from Dust… to Dawn.

From mortality… to hope.
From surrender… to resurrection.
From the cross… to new life.

Lent is not about spiritual punishment.

It is about spiritual honesty.

It is about remembering who we are — and whose we are.

We invite you to join us this Sunday as we begin this sacred journey together.

Let’s stop striving.

Let’s start surrendering.

Let’s remember the truth:

We are formed from dust.
We are sustained by breath.
And in Christ, dawn is coming.

I love this Church. I love Neighborhood.
