Rest, Wonder, and the Wide Colorado Sky

Theme: Wonder in creation
Big Idea: God’s glory is not hidden—it’s everywhere if we pause and look up.

Today is Labor Day—a moment to pause from our work and embrace the gift of rest. Here in Colorado, the skies are wide, the mountains call, and the crisp hint of fall is beginning to slip into the air. What better time to step outside and let creation remind us of God’s glory?

Two weeks ago, we began a new series of talks at the church I pastor (Neighborhood Friends Church) called Wonder. As schools start back up, vacations wrap up, and summer fades into fall, this series is meant to remind us that even as the busyness of life resumes, our souls need more than just productivity—they need wonder. Vacations are supposed to restore that sense of awe, but often what we’re truly longing for is a deeper encounter with the presence of God.

In week one, I anchored the message in Psalm 19:1, which says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” This verse reminds us that God’s glory is not hidden in some far-off place—it’s woven into the very fabric of creation. Every sunrise, every starry night, every shifting season is a living testimony to His presence.

That declaration is ongoing. The stars don’t just speak on special occasions—they’re testifying every single night. The question is: are we listening?

In a world where our attention is constantly pulled downward—into phones, schedules, and endless tasks—looking up requires intentionality. Wonder doesn’t happen by accident; it’s cultivated when we create space for it.

So maybe today, instead of cramming your schedule full of activity, you could:

  • Take a walk through a local park and let the changing season speak to you.
  • Gather with friends or family for a picnic under the open sky.
  • Spend a few quiet minutes stargazing tonight, thanking God for His majesty.
  • Plan a short hike this week to enjoy the beauty of Colorado’s trails.

I’ve found that when I slow down enough to notice creation, my prayers shift. They become less about my problems and more about God’s majesty. The trees, the mountains, the vastness of the night sky—all of it reminds me that God is both powerful and present. If He sustains galaxies, He can certainly sustain me.

So on this Labor Day, take time to rest. Step into creation and let wonder reset your perspective. Because the heavens are declaring. Are you listening?

Scripture for Reflection:

  • Psalm 19:1–2 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.”
  • Romans 1:20 – “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

A Prayer:
Creator God, thank You for the gift of rest and the beauty that surrounds us here in Colorado. On this Labor Day, help me step away from striving and simply enjoy Your creation. Open my eyes to wonder, my heart to gratitude, and my spirit to the reminder that You are near. May the heavens refresh my soul and reorient my week. Amen.
