DEVOTED: WK 3

What brings the church together best?
The table. The Communion table in the sanctuary, and the table of communion in the fellowship hall—both are Lord’s Tables that can turn the tables on real human concerns, such as poverty, persecution, and addictions.

At every meal Jesus ate—meals with outcasts, outliers, officials, friends, strangers—Jesus was both guest and host. Wherever and whenever Jesus ate, Jesus’ presence turned every table into an altar. On whatever table Jesus ate there was always a mystery food: his own body and blood. Every table where Jesus ate was a potluck meal, with the greatest offering being his presence, the very revelation of God. When Jesus is at table, the best thing on the table is not something you can finger, fork, or stick. The best thing on the table is the presence of God. The presence of Jesus turns a simple meal into a sumptuous feast.

The story of our Christian faith didn’t take shape behind pulpits or on altars or in books. No, the story of our Christian faith takes shape around common tables, as people face one another as equals, telling stories, sharing memories, enjoying food with one another.

Bring a meal and a story to share! We will have a grand feast where the mystery of our unity will be found in the powerful presence of Christ.

See you Tomorrow! Come hungry.
